According to the Ho Chi Minh Thought curriculum, the foundational theory consists of three core sources:
First, the traditional values of the beautiful Vietnamese nation. Ho Chi Minh embodies the love for the country, the spirit of fighting against foreign invasion, the humanistic values, the spirit of independence, freedom, and the unique cultural identity of the nation. These values form the foundation of the personality and ideological perspective of the Vietnamese people.
Second, the essence of human culture. In the process of activities in many countries, Ho Chi Minh continues to absorb the humanistic values of Confucianism, the essence of Buddhism, and the values of freedom, equality, and democracy from the West. People always continue to build on the spirit of creativity and adaptability to the realities of Vietnam.
Third, Marxism – Leninism. This is the foundational theory directly determining the path. After studying Lenin’s foundational theory, Ho Chi Minh determined the path of national liberation through the socialist revolution and creatively applied it to the conditions of Vietnam, forming the Vietnamese nation closely linked with socialist ideology, the entire nation united, building a government of the people, by the people, for the people, and following the revolutionary path.

Theo giáo trình Tư tưởng Hồ Chí Minh, cơ sở lý luận hình thành và phát triển tư tưởng Hồ Chí Minh gồm ba nguồn gốc cơ bản:
Thứ nhất, giá trị truyền thống tốt đẹp của dân tộc Việt Nam. Hồ Chí Minh kế thừa lòng yêu nước, ý chí đấu tranh chống ngoại xâm, tinh thần đoàn kết, nhân nghĩa, hiếu học, cần cù lao động và khát vọng độc lập, tự do. Những giá trị này là nền tảng hình thành nhân cách và lý tưởng cứu nước của Người.
Thứ hai, tinh hoa văn hóa nhân loại. Trong quá trình hoạt động ở nhiều nước, Hồ Chí Minh tiếp thu có chọn lọc tư tưởng nhân nghĩa của Nho giáo, từ bi của Phật giáo và các giá trị tự do, bình đẳng, dân chủ của phương Tây. Người luôn tiếp nhận trên tinh thần phê phán, sáng tạo và phù hợp với thực tiễn Việt Nam.
Thứ ba, chủ nghĩa Mác – Lênin. Đây là cơ sở lý luận trực tiếp và giữ vai trò quyết định. Sau khi tiếp cận Luận cương của V.I. Lênin, Hồ Chí Minh xác định con đường giải phóng dân tộc theo cách mạng vô sản và vận dụng sáng tạo vào điều kiện Việt Nam, hình thành tư tưởng về độc lập dân tộc gắn với chủ nghĩa xã hội, đại đoàn kết toàn dân tộc, xây dựng Đảng, Nhà nước của dân, do dân, vì dân và đạo đức cách mạng.
Trong giai đoạn hiện nay, những giá trị cốt lõi của tư tưởng Hồ Chí Minh vẫn có ý nghĩa to lớn. Mỗi cá nhân cần phát huy lòng yêu nước, chấp hành pháp luật, học tập và lao động sáng tạo, sống trung thực, nhân ái, đoàn kết và đặt lợi ích chung lên trên lợi ích cá nhân.
Đối với sinh viên, cần không ngừng tự học, nâng cao chuyên môn, kỹ năng và ngoại ngữ; tích cực nghiên cứu khoa học, tham gia hoạt động tình nguyện, bảo vệ môi trường, hiến máu nhân đạo, sử dụng mạng xã hội có trách nhiệm và góp phần bảo vệ, quảng bá hình ảnh đất nước.
