Sambac or grandiflorum — and what jasmine means for sensitive skin

“Jasmine” on an ingredient list is usually one of two species. Sambac jasmine (Jasminum sambac) is the small-flowered jasmine used to scent tea across Asia; three bottles here — Gucci Bloom, Jasmin Rouge and Libre — name it explicitly. Grandiflorum jasmine (Jasminum grandiflorum, also listed as officinale) is the species grown around Grasse and in India that yields the classic absolute of French perfumery.

The two are not on the same footing when it comes to allergies. In its scientific opinion SCCS/1459/11 — the document that classifies 82 substances as “established contact allergens in humans” — the EU’s Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety places Jasminum grandiflorum/officinale extract among the natural extracts with the strongest human evidence (its highest category, +++). Jasminum sambac extract is only classed as a “likely” contact allergen, because the human evidence is insufficient. That SCCS list is the basis on which Regulation (EU) 2023/1545 widened individual allergen labelling from 24 to 80 substances — applying to products newly placed on the EU market from 1 August 2026, above 0.001% in leave-on products such as perfume.

In practice: if white florals have ever given you a rash, read the end of the ingredient list on the box. Jasminum grandiflorum flower extract listed on its own is a reason to patch-test first; bottles built on sambac are the more cautious choice, though nobody is immune. For any bottle, 10–20 minutes on the wrist before buying remains the surest test.
