The right rose perfume depends less on the rose itself than on what sits beside it: fruit keeps it young and fresh, while woods, vanilla and musk give it depth for the evening. Rose has long been a favourite with women for being gentle, alluring and easy to like, in classic and modern forms alike. This guide from Thơmore compares five well-known rose perfumes, then explains how to choose one and wear it well.
Quick Summary
- Rose suits many occasions: paired with fruit (strawberry, raspberry, lychee, pear) it feels youthful; paired with woods, vanilla or musk it gains depth and suits the evening.
- Five bottles compared: Kiều by Thơmore (after Nguyễn Du’s “The Tale of Kiều”), Miss Dior Rose N’Roses, Lancôme Trésor Midnight Rose, Parfums de Marly Delina La Rosée and Davidoff Cool Water Woman.
- Let the season guide you: spring and summer call for a fresh rose at a lighter concentration; autumn and winter suit rose with woods, vanilla or spice.
- Sensitive skin should read the label: EU scientists class rose oil as an established contact allergen, and geraniol, citronellol and eugenol must be named on EU labels. Test on a small patch of skin first.
- Rose at Thơmore: Kiều and Đây Thôn Vĩ Dạ (“This Is Vĩ Dạ Village”, after Hàn Mặc Tử’s poem set in Huế) are our two bottles with a rose note, at 289,000 VND for 10 ml.
Why are rose perfumes so popular?
Rose has long been a symbol of feminine beauty, allure and elegance, so it is no surprise that rose perfumes stay among the top choices for women of every age.
- Soft and easy to like: rose feels gentle and fresh yet still draws people in. At the office or out with friends, it leaves a light, friendly impression.
- Suited to many styles and occasions: depending on the notes around it, rose can move from delicate to seductive, so it works from the office to a party.
- Comfortable in hot, humid weather: compared with very heavy scents, a rose perfume can feel cool and clean, which suits a climate like Vietnam’s and keeps you confident through the day.
- Easy to pair with modern fashion: rose is not a demanding scent and rarely clashes with a look, whether feminine, elegant or modern.

Where does the rose in the bottle come from, and why do labels list geraniol and citronellol?
The rose in a perfume can come from rose oil, often that of the Damask rose (Rosa damascena), widely known as “Bulgarian rose oil”, and from aroma molecules with a rosy character. The EU’s Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS) states that geraniol is a component of rose oil, as it is of many other essential oils such as geranium, citronella and lavender.
In its opinion SCCS/1459/11 (adopted in June 2012), rose oil (Rosa spp.) is classed among the natural extracts that are established contact allergens in humans. One example the SCCS cites: of 422 consecutive patients patch tested, 5 (1.2%) reacted to Bulgarian rose oil at 2%. Geraniol, citronellol and eugenol, which often appear in rose blends, are on the same established list.
That is why EU cosmetics law requires these substances to be named in the ingredient list. Under Annex III of Regulation (EC) 1223/2009, geraniol (entry 78), citronellol (entry 86) and eugenol (entry 71) must be listed when they exceed 0.001% in leave-on products such as perfume. Regulation (EU) 2023/1545 expands the list of substances that must be named from 24 to 80; new products placed on the EU market have had to follow the new list since 1 August 2026.
In practice, seeing geraniol or citronellol on a label does not mean a perfume is “less natural”, since rose oil itself contains them. But if your skin has reacted to scented cosmetics before, read the ingredient list and test on a small patch of skin before regular use.
How to choose a rose perfume that suits you
A rose perfume always feels feminine and elegant, but not every rose suits every person. To find yours, weigh up three things.
1. Choose by personal style
Your style has a strong influence on the kind of rose that suits you:
- If you like a soft, feminine feel: choose rose paired with sweet fruit such as pear, lychee or raspberry.
- If you are after allure and luxury: choose rose blended with woods, musk or vanilla for depth.
- If you like to stand out: try rose with amber, patchouli or black pepper.
2. Choose by season and time of day
When you wear a perfume also shapes how it comes across:
- In spring and summer: choose a fresh, light rose. These scents suit daytime and hot weather.
- In autumn and winter: choose rose with warm notes such as woods, vanilla or spice. These suit the evening and cold days.
3. Choose by concentration
Concentration affects how strong a perfume is and how long it stays with you:
- EDT (Eau de Toilette): light and cool with shorter wear, good for everyday use, especially in hot weather.
- EDP (Eau de Parfum): richer and usually longer-lasting, easy to wear through the day in many settings.
- Parfum (Extrait): the highest concentration, usually the longest wear, suited to special occasions or cold weather.

How to wear rose perfume well
To bring out the best in a rose perfume:
- Spray warm spots such as the wrists, behind the ears, the nape of the neck, the chest or the inner elbows, where body heat helps the scent spread.
- Don’t rub after spraying. Rubbing thins the film of perfume on warm skin, so the top notes fade sooner.
- Moisturise before you spray, because scent clings longer to well-hydrated skin.
- Apply after a shower, once you are dry, because clean skin holds scent better.
- Don’t overdo it: 1 to 2 sprays are enough for people near you to notice the scent subtly.
So, how should you choose a rose perfume?
It is no accident that rose perfumes have held their place with women across generations. Once you know how to choose and wear one, rose can become your own scent signature. Let it bring out the refinement and charm in your everyday style.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does rose perfume work in Vietnam’s hot, humid weather?
Yes, if you choose the right kind of rose. Fresh versions paired with citrus or fruit, at a light concentration such as EDT, are more comfortable on hot days, and 1 to 2 sprays are enough. Keep richer roses with woods, vanilla or spice for evenings or cooler days.
Should I choose EDT or EDP for a rose perfume?
EDT is light and cool, good for everyday wear; EDP is richer and holds longer through the day; Parfum suits special occasions. Bear in mind that no law fixes the percentage of perfume oil an EDT or EDP must contain. Each house sets its own ratio, so try the scent itself rather than relying on the concentration label.
Why does the ingredient list on a rose perfume show geraniol and citronellol?
These aroma substances occur naturally in rose oil and many other essential oils. They belong to the fragrance allergens that EU law requires to be named above 0.001% in leave-on products, so seeing them on a label is normal and no sign of poor quality.
Can sensitive skin wear rose perfume?
Yes, but with care: the SCCS classes rose oil among the natural extracts that are established contact allergens in humans. Spray a small patch of skin and watch it for a day, prefer spraying the inner lining of your clothes rather than your skin, and stop if your skin turns red or itchy.
Which Thơmore perfumes feature rose?
We have two: Kiều, with peony, rose, white musk and woody notes, and Đây Thôn Vĩ Dạ, with jasmine sambac, May rose, mimosa and musk. Both are EDP, at 289,000 VND for 10 ml and 750,000 VND for 30 ml (checked 29 October 2026).
